DETAILS: Jazz musicians and students of jazz music are invited to join The John Parks Institute – with Founder and Friends for a FREE jazz workshop and performance at The Straz. Attendees will explore the relationship between the improvisational essence of jazz and the creation of story and legacy through movement.
Known for his work as a dance lecturer, performer and choreographer, Parks will be joined by colleagues from his dance ensemble and other friends to take the audience on a legacy journey. Attendees will experience music and dance through their evolution for entertainment, empowerment and healing. Parks will be supported by an ensemble of jazz musicians led by Fred Johnson, artist-in-residence at the Straz Center.
Registration for the free workshop is required by signing up at https://patelconservatory.asapconnected.com/#CourseID=291288. Space is limited.
This workshop will culminate in an exciting evening concert on the Riverwalk Stage at 7 p.m. featuring Parks and his dance ensemble, joined by Johnson and his quintet. The improvisational performance celebrates how jazz inspires movement and movement inspires jazz. The concert is free and open to the public, but registration is required online at https://www.strazcenter.org/events/2324-season/straz-jazz-project/concert-series/.
These events are the second in the three-part Straz Jazz Project, that began with a workshop and performance by Sara Elisa & Family in October and will finish with a steel pan workshop and concert on Dec. 9.
