NCF Community,
New College of Florida’s Emergency Operations Team is continuing to monitor the progress of Tropical Storm Idalia, which is presently located in the Gulf of Mexico off the Yucatán peninsula, tracking towards Florida. It is projected to strengthen into a hurricane later today. While it is still too early to determine if/where the storm may make landfall, the projected path shows a likely landfall north of the Tampa Bay area. The Sarasota area still remains OUTSIDE of the projected highest impact areas of the storm.
Out of an abundance of caution, Interim President Corcoran has decided to CANCEL classes tomorrow (Tuesday, August 29). Classes are projected to resume Wednesday, provided the campus does not suffer any damage or a power loss, which is not projected to happen at this time. The NCF Emergency Operations Team will meet Tuesday morning to assess risk mitigation and threats, including any further modifications to campus operations.
New College of Florida encourages our community to remain safely at home on Tuesday, whether that home is on campus, at a partner hotel, or at a private residence.
Campus dining services will remain operational for breakfast, lunch, and dinner; however, the coffee shoppe will be closed. Students that are residing in partner hotels will have all three boxed meals delivered throughout the day. No student on a dining plan will be without breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
As of now, the campus police department will be fully operational. Faculty are encouraged to remain home while classes are cancelled. Campus staff should contact their supervisor to determine if they should report to campus tomorrow or remain home.
All extracurricular activities (including athletics) are cancelled on Tuesday.
Current information from the National Weather Service about Tropical Storm Idalia can be found HERE.
As relevant severe weather advisories and updates are issued for our area, NCF Emergency Management will communicate any operational changes via email and through the new Mighty Banyan Safe app, which can be downloaded HERE.
Our area is under a Hurricane WARNING, meaning effects from the hurricane will be felt to varying degrees along the path of the storm.
Additional updates will be offered at least twice per day until the storm is no longer a threat to this region.
