Hillsborough Community College (HCC) is pleased to announce the hiring of L. Garrett Weddle as the new executive director of the HCC Foundation. Weddle previously worked for the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG), serving as the executive director of development for university advancement. He will assume his position at HCC on July 13, 2023.
“We are delighted to welcome Garrett to lead the College’s foundation,” said Dr. Ken Atwater. “He brings a wealth of knowledge, and we look forward to the experience he will bring to the HCC community.”
As the HCC Foundation executive director, Weddle will secure and steward philanthropic support to enhance the College and the success of its students through annual scholarships, endowments, program and faculty support, and college-wide funding initiatives.

Weddle holds a bachelor of science degree in industrial engineering and operations research from Virginia Tech. For the past 12 years, he has actively raised millions of dollars for higher education at UNCG and Virginia Tech and served in leadership positions at both institutions. His wife, Meg, manages the family clothing business in Radford, VA they started 37 years ago, and Garrett spent 16 years listing, selling, and investing in real estate. He has received numerous awards and served in various appointments throughout his distinguished entrepreneurial career which have included Radford Business Person of the Year and serving as a councilman for the Radford City Council, President of the Radford Chamber of Commerce and President of the New River Valley Economic Development Alliance.
