Helping a Single Mother Realize her Dream of Homeownership

July 6, 2023 by Post

Tampa, Fl. July 6, 2023 – Habitat for Humanity of Hillsborough County is honored to announce it has received a grant from State Farm Insurance for $5,000.00 which will help a single mother realize her dream of homeownership. Funds from the grant will support material costs for a new single-family home build for the Rosquette family.

Yanela Rosquette, a single mother of a seven-year-old boy, is in need of affordable housing. She is currently renting a small, overcrowded place where the rent increases year after year and has become unaffordable with her modest income as a medical assistant. “In my current situation, I feel crowded and stressed often, and my son can sense that. With a home of our own, that would change.” Yanela said. Once Yanela closes on her Habitat home, she will not have to worry about moving her child from place to place or switching schools often and will have the stability to raise her son in a safe place he can call “home”.

As part of the Habitat program, Yanela has committed to completing 300 hours of sweat equity, building her own home and the homes of others, and will take a Habitat educational curriculum which include courses on budgeting, finance, and home maintenance to help her on her path to successful homeownership. Through Habitat Hillsborough, she will receive an affordable mortgage which will be no more than 30% of her monthly income.
