TAMPA, FL (July 3, 2023) — With Tampa Bay temps in the mid to upper 90’s and the heat index topping 100 in many areas, Dr. Nobuki Stobaeus (aka “Dr. Nobuki”), DVM, Area Medical Officer for Royal Pets Market & Resort and Veterinary Center, is urging pet parents to “cool it” when outdoors with their pets this holiday weekend.
“Heat stroke is a serious and possibly life-threatening condition,” said Dr. Nobuki. “A pet’s internal temperature can increase rapidly, damaging the brain or other internal organs and leading to death.” Even if the pet survives, they may have short term or long term disabilities. “Keep your pet cool, make sure they have a shady place to rest, and avoid walking them over hot pavement.”
Dehydration is another serious and possibly life-threatening condition. “If a pet gets dehydrated, it can affect their blood pressure and the perfusion of blood into organs, preventing the pet from cooling itself which will lead to heat stroke,” said Dr. Nobuki. “Making sure a pet stays hydrated is key to them having a fun time in a hot environment.”
Dr. Nobuki offers one final word of extreme caution: “Never leave your pet in a parked car, where temperatures can quickly rise to 150 degrees or higher, even on cooler days and with the windows cracked open.”
With many families destined for the beach or other outdoor activities leading up to fireworks, pet parents should take extra precautions. Fireworks can be a source of great anxiety for pets when loud noises and bright flashes overwhelm them.
