Funding will be used to establish a Seniors-to-Seniors adoption program giving people (60+) a subsidized adoption fee when they choose to adopt a senior cat.
Sarasota, Florida– (June XX, 2023) – Cat Depot has been selected as a new partner shelter of Pets for the Elderly (PFE), a national nonprofit organization that pays a portion of the fee for senior citizens (age 60 and over) to adopt a companion cat from a participating PFE animal shelter.
“We are thrilled to have Cat Depot join our network,” said Susan Kurowski, executive director of Pets for the Elderly. “We are impressed with their mission to save lives, find loving homes, and provide resources and education to improve the destiny of homeless cats. We look forward to partnering with them in 2023 and beyond.”
PFE was established in 1992 by the late Avrum (Avvy) Katz, who had the vision of providing companionship to senior individuals through pet ownership, while saving the lives of companion animals in shelters. In 2021, PFE achieved 100,000 adoptions it has facilitated since the organization expanded nationally in 2002.
“We are excited to offer subsidized adoption fees to senior citizens, and to be able to find loving homes for senior cats. Companion pets have been shown through research to improve physical and mental health as well as offer an overall healthier aging process.” – Susan Hanus, Executive Director Cat Depot
Recognizing the many well-documented health benefits of pet ownership for seniors, PFE is currently the only national organization matching shelter animals with senior citizens and works with 57 participating shelters in 35 states – shelters that are not only dedicated to saving the lives of animals, but also committed to supporting and implementing the PFE mission.
