Adaptive Sports Centers: 10 Finest Picks in the US

March 29, 2023 by Post

Adaptive sports are sports refined or created so that the differently-abled can play them. You can find many facilities around the country that cater to these sports. Some of them are both gorgeous and well-equipped buildings.

You can locate an adaptive sports center in Utah and many other states as well. We will discuss some of the country’s best ones in the following article.

Loon Mountain

You will find this facility in Lincoln, New Hampshire. It’s not the biggest or the most high-tech, but it’s not far from Boston, and it has been around since 1987. You can enjoy more than 20 different sports there.

University of Central Oklahoma Wellness Center

Located in Edmond, Oklahoma, this facility has excellent Paralympic training equipment. This site also trains Olympic athletes. It’s nice that both groups can train in the same building and encourage each other.

Huff Hall Gym

In Champaigne, Illinois, you’ll find Huff Hall Gym, where both women’s and men’s wheelchair basketball makes its home. There are special locker rooms designed for the individuals who play there, and also weights and other amenities.

Chula Vista Olympic Training Center

In Chula Vista, California, this training center has 155 acres, and it’s one of the best training facilities in the world, bar none. There are four natural turf soccer fields and six sand volleyball courts.

Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center

You will find this facility in Charlotte, North Carolina. It has some Olympic-sized swimming pools, and it also underwent a massive expansion project recently. There are new bulkheads now, as well as new diving boards and starting blocks.

Lakeshore

In Homewood, Alabama, you will find the facility known simply as Lakeshore. It features 45 acres, a couple of heated pools, a 200-meter track, and a seven-lane marksmanship range.

Winter Park Resort

In Colorado’s Winter Park, you can visit the Winter Park Resort, where mountain biking takes center stage in the summer and snowboarding and skiing in the winter. Over 3,000 children and adults with disabilities use it regularly, and it has been open for over 40 years.

Ken Lanning Golf Center

Located in Jefferson City, Missouri, this golf center has a nine-hole course designed for individuals with disabilities. No hole is longer than 120 yards, and they are all par-3s.

Plassman Athletic Center

The Plassman Athletic Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana, is designed for people with disabilities who like to play sports. However, it’s also used for education. The centerpiece is the 65,000-square-foot fieldhouse. There’s also a wellness center and a warm-water pool with a wheelchair ramp.

Spire Institute

In Geneva, Ohio, the Spire Institute is one the best training facilities for Paralympic basketball teams. The US men’s team trains there and the building has  been used for events for the Big East, Big 10, and Atlantic 10 basketball conferences. The complex has 160 acres and 750,000 square feet of enclosed space.

These are collectively the finest adaptive sports buildings in the United States and are a credit to their designers.
