The Henderson Family
Niesha Henderson is a Medical Support Assistant at Bay Pines Veterans Affairs and a single mother to her 4-year-old son Jacion who also goes by “Jace”. Jace currently loves Spiderman and anything involving water. “He loves anything to do with going outside and running around. He’s a ball of energy,” his mother says. “My son is the sweetest kid ever. He has a big personality for a four-year-old and he’s so outgoing, silly, and funny.” Niesha describes herself as creative, helpful, determined, and loving.
This small but mighty family of two is currently struggling with what many families in our community are beginning to experience in the current housing crisis: space and affordability. Receiving her acceptance into the Habitat program was a dream come true because she knew that these challenges would be solved after moving into her forever home. “As soon as Jack told me I was accepted I cried like a baby,” she says. “There were so many emotions hitting me at once: joy, happiness, and most of all, relief.”
The Allen Family
Terrina Allen is a Certified Medical Professional at Professional Healthcare and is very close to completing her journey towards homeownership alongside her 19-year-old son, Amondrai. “Homeownership is very important to me to have something to call my own. I will be the second person within the family to own a home and truly understand the process of homeownership which means a lot given my background. I was not taught about savings, homeownership, or reliability from my family. I am determined to defy the odds because I know what it’s like to sleep in a shelter and must guard your child and belongings. This experience has taught me to never give up and to keep my eyes on the prize and create a foundation for me and my son.” The Allen’s Family home is sponsored by generous Habitat donors, Michael & Carolina Holtz.
|Habitat for Humanity of Pinellas County and West Pasco Counties Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity of Pinellas and West Pasco Counties has served over 790 homeowner partners since 1985. Volunteers and the future homeowners construct the homes, which are sold at no profit and financed with a zero-interest loan. Habitat homeowner candidates earn 30 to 80 percent of area median income. Candidates must demonstrate need for adequate shelter; ability to pay back a zero-interest loan and willingness to partner with Habitat to complete a robust homebuyer education curriculum and invest 350 to 450 “sweat equity” hours. Mortgage monies are used to build even more homes, making each donation to Habitat a perpetual legacy to the community. Habitat believes that homeownership contributes to family stability, leading, in turn, to community stability. Additionally, the affiliate raises funds through their ReStores; home improvement outlets where donated household and building items are sold to the public. |
