(TAMPA, Florida) – After launching improvisational workshops in July 2022, Stageworks Theatre, Tampa’s longest-running theatre company, is expanding its programing of the popular theater genre with an additional eight-week class as part of its ImprovInstitute.
Stageworks’ newest improv workshop, Longform Adventure Playtime encourages beginner to advanced students to create a continuous improvised piece inspired by a prompt or suggestion from other members of the class. Students will explore the basic elements of longform scene work, such as “yes and”, “base reality”, and the “first unusual thing.” While most of this course focuses on improv scene work, students will also learn a variety of longform formats, basic storytelling skills, character work, and a few key scene editing tools.
“We’ve received such positive feedback from our new improv programs; we’re thrilled to expand the program,” said Stageworks’ Improv Director, Tiffany Ford. “Offering these courses gives participants a chance to try something that they might never have done before, and also allows the theatre company to extend its educational mission within Tampa Bay.”
Longform Adventure Playtime is open to students 18 and older, and class size is limited to 18 students. The workshops will be held for 8 weeks on consecutive Mondays starting on October 24 through December 19 from 7 – 8:30 p.m. at Stageworks Theatre, 1120 E. Kennedy Blvd., Suite 151 in Tampa’s Channel District. Tuition is $200. Monthly payments plans are also available by calling the Stageworks box office at (813) 374-2416.
Stageworks will continue its existing Improv for Life wellness drop-in workshops where students learn the approachable practice of improv. Created in collaboration with mental health practitioners, each month’s workshop focuses on a different topic, such as Connecting with Others (October), Lifting Your Spirits (November), Letting Go of Attachments (December), Processing Change (January), and Self-Love (February). Along the way, participants get to practice ways to ease stress, build confidence and trust in others and most importantly, have fun. The drop-in format offers low-commitment and high reward. Courses are held the first Tuesday of each month from 7 – 8:30 p.m. through February at Stageworks Theatre. The courses cost $15 each.
