City Receives Grant for Union Academy Neighborhood The National Trust for Historic Preservation awarded the City a $50,000 grant from the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund. Funds will support a Cultural Resources Survey of the historically and culturally significant properties that will establish the foundation for a preservation program for the Union Academy Neighborhood. This is an initial step in a larger plan to address inequities in the neighborhood, and will involve many public participation meetings. The project is expected to begin in early fall and be completed by summer 2023.![]() |
Coming Soon: Sponge City Brewing The long-vacant produce stand at 501 S. Pinellas Ave. was recently sold and is undergoing transformation into Sponge City Brewing, a new brewery that also will serve food. The name pays homage to the city’s historic culture, and will be the sixth brewery in the city. Sponge City will feature a large outdoor area and deck, and is expected to open later this year. |
Downtown Attracts New Residential HousingMore housing opportunities may be available in the near Downtown area with the addition of an eight-unit multifamily development in three, two-story buildings at 331 N. Safford Ave. Located adjacent to the Pinellas Trail, the new complex offers residents amenities for Downtown living and provides support to area businesses. The project was approved by the P&Z Board in July and will be heard by the BOC for final approval in August.![]() |
