The greenhouse will grow fresh, local vegetables throughout the year to fight food insecurity and will be unveiled during the St. Pete Youth Farm’s Juneteenth celebration
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (June 17, 2022) – The USF St. Petersburg campus and the St. Pete Youth Farm will unveil the Fresh and Local Greenhouse on Monday, June 20 at 9:30 a.m.The new greenhouse will enhance urban agriculture, promote food security and provide fresh, local vegetables for the community year-round. The structure will allow for both hydroponics and aquaponics farming and provide college and high school students the opportunity to learn about innovative food production systems while enhancing business skills. The unveiling will coincide with the St. Pete Youth Farm’s Juneteenth celebration that will feature students and members of the community working the farm, African drumming and dance, food and other festivities.
The Fresh and Local Greenhouse was made possible by a $25,000 grant from the Ford Motor Company Fund, through their Ford College Community Challenge, and additional funding from local donors and internal grants. The unveiling will take place at the St. Pete Youth Farm outside the Enoch D. Davis Center, 1664 12th Street South, St. Petersburg, FL 33705.
