World Environment Day (June 5) and World Oceans Day (June 8) urges us all to spread awareness and take action against the ongoing environmental threats due to climate change and high pollution rates. Celebrate these environmental holidays at the Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center and learn the importance of the estuary and its remarkable recovery from a failing habitat to a vibrant, productive marine environment through these educational experiences and programs:
M/V Discovery Eco-Vessel The eco-vessel tour, guided by expert marine science educators, enables attendees to experience the thriving marine life firsthand while learning about the deep history of Tampa Bay. Attendees can immerse themselves in the aquatic delight by participating in a fisheries trawl, water sampling, dolphin identification, bird spotting, and more.
One Planet. One Ocean. Upon entering the Discovery Center, there is a brief video presentation on the creation and importance of the world’s estuaries. Throughout history, people have been drawn to estuaries, first for food and shelter, then as vibrant economic, recreational and commercial hubs. The ‘One Planet. One Ocean.’ exhibit demonstrates the impact of ever-denser populations on these estuary environments.
The Living Shoreline Living shorelines act as an important barrier protecting coastlines by absorbing wave energy which ultimately reduces erosion, filters water and supports the growth of marine life. Two exhibits at the Discovery Center demonstrate how this is accomplished. Make Waves demonstrates how a wave that dissipates over a natural shoreline is significantly less damaging to habitat and property than a wave crashing into a seawall. Oysters at Work showcases the vital role oysters play in cleaning Tampa Bay’s waters. Visitors activate the oyster filtration process and watch murky, sediment filled water become crystal clear in no time.
