DETAILS: The Straz Center, Art2Action and Paint22 present the Veteran Community Open Mic and visual arts series, a creative and courageous space where all people are welcome regardless of identity. It’s a space where veterans and civilians can bring their full selves, listen, share and grow together. Paint22 will provide art exhibits featuring veteran artists at each event, such as Airforce veteran Iona Parris SeaShell Queen and Marine wife Joan “Mommy” Bragg who will be featured on June 12th.
Andrea Assaf, Artistic Director of Art2Action, and poet-veteran BlacJak will co-host the event with music by DJ Cotton. Featured guest artists include choreographers/performers Celeste Miller, Dora Arreola (Associate Professor of Theatre at USF), and Miroslava Wilson from Mexico. These three women artists of different generations are collaborating on a new site-specific, bilingual dance-theater work, At Waters Edge/Al filo del agua, which will premiere at The Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg (MFA) June 23rd & 26th.
Open Mic sign-up spots are up to five minutes each, in any genre or creative form. Pre-registration is encouraged, but not required, at www.art2action.org.
This is a FREE event, with free non-alcoholic beverages provided for all. Art2Action respectfully requests that an alcohol/substance-free and weapons-free environment be maintained. Masks and social distancing are encouraged on the premises.
