Tampa City Councilman Joseph Citro and Sidewalk Stompers will be at Roosevelt Elementary School on Friday, May 20 , at 8:20a.m. to present the Stomping Cup Trophy to the classroom with the highest number of students walking to school this year.
Sidewalks Stompers, an award-winning walk-to-school advocacy nonprofit, launched “Walk to School Wednesday” at Roosevelt in 2016 with 80 walkers. Today over 280 students walk or bike to Roosevelt each week.
“Our enthusiastic Roosevelt walkers and bikers have given us a platform to advocate for safer pedestrian routes around schools,” said Emily Hinsdale, Sidewalk Stompers President. “Since this program began, the neighborhood surrounding this school has benefited from new crosswalks, new stop signs, new signage, and new crossing guards. Engaged kids and an engaged community generate interest in safer roads in Tampa.”
Roosevelt’s Sidewalk Stompers weekly incentive-based program provides recess toys for classrooms to encourage more students to walk or bike to school. The program is designed to increase student health, mental wellness, community connections, and road safety.
Sidewalk Stompers currently offers programs at nine Hillsborough County public schools. Our vision is a new generation engaged in active transportation, growing up healthier and better invested in their community.
