Obesity is associated with many of the leading causes of death in America. Sulphur Springs is a low-equity community located in Tampa with limited access to healthy food options; however, the area is heavily populated with unhealthy fast-food restaurants. With a lack of healthy food options, Sulphur Springs is at an increased risk for the development of health issues, such as heart disease and additional, unnecessary problems for the already struggling community. It was found that 40% of the students in first grade are considered overweight or obese in Sulphur Springs.1 This is an alarming statistic that indicates immediate action must occur in order to increase the availability of healthy food in the area.
Our group, the “Sulphur Springs Healthy Relief Initiative,” is a student-led group that seeks to implement positive change within the community of Sulphur Springs by orchestrating the expansion of affordable healthy food options. Our initiative will leave a lasting impression on Sulphur Springs through the implementation of environmental treatment restoration, food banks, community gardens and government-funded initiatives.
