Project Managed by Local Artist Zulu Painter
Tampa Bay artists are invited to submit portfolios for the SHINE Unity Project which furthers the mission of enabling diverse forms of art and culture to thrive, ensuring greater accessibility and healthier communities. The SHINE Unity Project consists of four (4) murals located in underserved neighborhoods and communities across St. Petersburg. This project is funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). Three (3) murals will be painted in June in preparation for Juneteenth. The fourth mural will take place in October as part of the annual SHINE Mural Festival.
Prolific St. Petersburg artist Zulu Painter (Carlos Culbertson) has been hired as Project Manager for the SHINE Unity Project. Culbertson, is a local multi-media artist working in traditional mediums as well as body paint, special effects and scenic art. An aerosol-based mural artist, Zulu Painter’s work can be seen across the US and whose murals in Historic Midtown lent to the art revitalization in this bustling area. His work can also be seen throughout the Deuces Live District. “The opportunity to bring uplifting art to kids and neighborhoods that are often underserved is why I’m so enthusiastic about this project,” Culbertson said. He’s leading the Call for Artists which is now live until April 17th, 2022.
