SCF Music Celebrates Black History Month With “Lift Every Voice and Sing”

February 23, 2022 by Post

(Bradenton, Fla., Feb. 22, 2022) — State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota’s (SCF) Symphonic Band, Concert Choir and Chamber Choir will musically celebrate Black History Month with a concert titled “Lift Every Voice and Sing” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, at the SCF Neel Performing Arts Center, 5840 26th St. W., Building 11 East. General admission tickets are $15 and can be purchased online at SCF.edu/Neel, while tickets for students and staff are $5 at the door.

The concert will feature Black composers such as Kevin Day and Duke Ellington, Black soloists including trumpeter Theresa May, many spirituals, and a presentation of traditional West African dancing and drumming by the Kumba Dance Company from Tampa. The Symphonic Band and combined Choirs will perform a special arrangement of the Black national anthem, Lift Every Voice and Sing to conclude the concert. This musical celebration of Black culture also will celebrate the diversity in the cultural arts at SCF.

SCF offers a two-year associate degree music program that prepares students to pursue a four-year music degree at the university level. Additional opportunities exist for music majors and non-music majors alike to participate in ensembles or private lessons.
