TAMPA, FLORIDA, February 2022: With the immense success of their debut installation “Munchausen Waves” at Gasparilla Music Festival in 2021, Crab Devil, the Tampa-based multi-media art collective, will unveil two new installations, “Photonic Vibrations,” at Gasparilla Music Festival and “The Bait Ball” at Gasparilla Festival of the Arts in 2022. Both installations will be featured in the much-anticipated immersive art experience, “The Peninsularium,” presented by Crab Devil.
Sure to capture the attention of festival-goers, “Photonic Vibrations” is an interactive environment composed of panels of animated pixel rings and sensors that respond to the viewer’s movement. Created in a 40-foot shipping container, “The room cycles through a few different programs, the dancing colors seem almost alive as they respond to your hand or your body,” comments creator and St. Petersburg artist Michael Horn.
Inspired by emergent behaviors, “Photonic Vibrations” stimulates an aesthetic and cerebral experience, only heightened by the engineering, mathematics, and careful craft behind the work. The colorful, hypnotic installation is just a sneak preview of the final version the public will see at The Peninsularium attraction.
Additionally, Crab Devil will make its first appearance at this year’s Gasparilla Festival of the Arts with the debut of “The Bait Ball.” Taking inspiration from elements of diverse flocking birds, schools of fish, and even human mosh pits, “The Bait Ball explores the exquisite beauty and wonder of a real Florida landscape that is all around us – above our heads and below our feet.”, says artist and CEO of Crab Devil, Devon Brady. This piece places viewers in a fantastical undersea experience that celebrates the power and beauty of one of the lynchpins of Florida’s aquatic ecosystem – the lowly mullet,” he continued.
“The Bait Ball” serves as an introduction to the scale, complexity, and fully immersive nature of the experience that Crab Devil has in store for visitors at its upcoming Florida-themed immersive art experience, The Peninsularium.
To interact with the two new installations, participants must attend this year’s Gasparilla Music Festival and Gasparilla Festival of the Arts. Gasparilla Music Festival requires a purchased ticket for entry while Gasparilla Festival of the Arts is free to the public.. You can catch Crab Devil at Gasparilla Music Festival all three days, February 25 – February 27, and at the Gasparilla Festival of the Arts on March 5 and March 6.
