Sarasota’s first professional basketball team, the Sarasota Manatees arrived on the seen in 2015. The uncertainty followed due to the city or area not being recognized as a basketball market. The team continued its’ path with rough seasons, low fan fair and very little attention. The organization led by the efficiency of Andre and Joscelyn Spivey along with Head Coach Jessie Parker has turned the team around into a winning franchise. When asked about the teams turn around, Co-Owner Andre Spivey said the following:
“We’ve seen seasons with no wins, season with low wins and tough games, but remained steady on our path. Most importantly we remained humble. We practice indoors, outdoors whatever it takes to build. The men and women of this organization believe in the city, believe in the area code and are joyed to continue to make history.”
We also had the chance to speak with Coach Jessie Parker about the success of this season and the 180 Point game and he said the following:
“It’s about defense, it isn’t about scoring as many points as possible, but rather creating easier points by causing turnovers, and converting those turnovers into points on fats breaks. This game we did this well, but we have a long season ahead and must remain focused on the many talented teams in this league.
Joscelyn Spivey is quoted as saying: “One of the most important things is watching players grow and develop confidence and stick together. This is a talented group, but they have remained focused with the spirit of hunger and humility. As we continue to improve, we hope to continue to see increased fan support.
This team is clearly headed in the right direction. As they continue on their path, we’re seeing the city and the entire 941 getting behind them, currently their record is 6-3. It’s looking like the team is headed to the playoffs, creating and exciting time for the city and fans. To learn more about the team visit www.sarasotamanateesbasketball.com.
