SARASOTA COUNTY – Sarasota County Government has published its annual summary of the projects, programs, and accomplishments in 2021. In addition to focusing on how local government works for the taxpayer, the 2021 Year in Review also contains a comprehensive look at how the county helped conduct one of the State of Florida’s most successful COVID-19 vaccination distribution programs. According to County Administrator Jonathan Lewis, county staff’s collaboration with the Florida Department of Health in Sarasota County (DOH) helped protect the community against COVID-19 and showcased their commitment to public service. “The team working at Sarasota County Government have truly excelled at providing the world-class our community has come to expect while faced with the ongoing challenges presented by COVID-19 vaccine,” Lewis added. “Through the leadership of our county commission, we will continue to find innovative solutions to serve the community and remain responsible stewards of public dollars.” Other achievements included completion of multiple infrastructure and capital improvement projects such as portions of the Legacy Trail extension, the Myrtle Street crossing improvements, Downtown Cooling Plant and Fire Station 13. The Sarasota County Board of County Commissioners also approved more than $102 million in construction contracts that will lay the groundwork for 2022. Those funds will be directed toward improvements including water quality, roadway resurfacing, enhanced safety measures at Sarasota County Area Transit bus stops and other initiatives. This hard work, along with the leadership provided by the county commission, was reflected in the 2021 annual citizen survey results, Lewis added. “Our commitment to maintaining local government resources while focusing on providing the highest level of customer service is why 97 percent of respondents rate their quality of life here as good or excellent. Our citizens trust and have confidence in their county government to do what is right,” he said. The year in review is available at srqcountyyearinreview2021.com. Hard copies of the companion piece will be available at county libraries and facilities while supplies last.
