Palms of Pasadena Hospital offers new robotics-assisted surgical option
The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons estimates knee replacement surgeries will increase by a staggering 180% between now and 2030 in United States1. As we age, the risk for osteoarthritis increases and with it the need for surgical intervention.
With this in mind, Palms of Pasadena Hospital hopes to raise awareness about recent advancements in orthopedic surgery that have made joint replacement an easier procedure for those who need to consider it.
In fact, Palms of Pasadena Hospital reached a significant milestone on November 10, 2021 when Brian Burke, MD, performed the first total knee replacement surgery using the hospital’s newly acquired surgical robot system.
“Recent advancements in robotics are transforming orthopedic surgery, with a high level of precision and accuracy, which in turn is providing a higher level of confidence in the surgical outcome,” said Dr. Burke. “I am excited to be a part of this new era in orthopedic surgery incorporating robotic technology to benefit our patients and our community.”
A recent survey found that fears about their procedure and recovery time were the biggest concerns patients had about moving forward with a knee surgery. Yet, a vast majority expressed interest in discussing a robotic-assisted procedure with their physician.
An important feature of the robotic system now in use at Palms of Pasadena is its 3D modeling capability, which allows the surgeon to customize the approach according to each patient’s unique anatomy. The result is a greater degree of precision than with traditional joint replacement surgery. Patients may also benefit from robotic-assisted surgery through a faster recovery, shorter hospital stay and quicker return of function in the replaced joint.
