When planning the 75th anniversary celebration for construction firm Robins & Morton and the opening of its Tampa office, team members in Tampa wanted to include an activity to benefit a local nonprofit. When COVID-19 led the company to cancel its celebration, it didn’t dampen their desire to give back to the community.
So, when more than 24 of the company’s construction professionals gathered to kick off three new major building projects, they ended their meeting by packing 30 duffel bags filled with personal care items for foster children awaiting permanent placement.
Robins & Morton Senior Marketing Coordinator Elizabeth Duncan said the Tampa office had selected Everyday Blessings, Inc., a Hillsborough County nonprofit that cares for up to 30 children, to benefit from what would have been the combined anniversary-and-opening celebration.
“Everyday Blessings gave us a list of items the children needed, including personal care items and duffle bags since many of them had their belongings in plastic garbage bags,” said Duncan. “When I asked our Operations Manager Todd Watson what items he still wanted us to donate, he said, ‘all of them.’”
It only took the Robins & Morton team members a few minutes between lunch and returning to their work to line up and pack the duffle bags, but their effort will make a big difference in the lives of children who have been removed from their previous homes due to abuse, neglect or abandonment.
Each Robins & Morton volunteer also wrote a personal note of encouragement attached to each duffel bag.
“Our company’s Giving With Purpose program encourages community involvement, but this team didn’t need any nudging,” said Watson. “To me, the best part was seeing each of our team members taking the time to write a heart-felt message to a kid who’s going through a tough time. That’s the real value of what we did.”
