Tampa, FL – Many residents have been in the uncomfortable situation to experience a 100% electrical power grid failure. As we noted from the most recent hurricane season, some residents have experienced the inconvenience of not having the benefit of electricity for hours, days or weeks. Most power grid failures have been weather or climate related, due to mechanical failures or equipment malfunctions. In our own homes and businesses, nationwide, we have become accustomed to the temporary yet common power outage scenario: flashlights and patience.
REVIEWING LOCAL, STATE AND NATIONAL BUILDING CODES
As a traveler, either for business or pleasure, it is noted in every hotel facility domestically, emergency lighting is provided in the common areas, as mandated by local and national codes. Please note, the hotel facility does not provide any emergency lighting in the guest suite bedrooms or guest suite bathrooms. The common question is why not?
The answer is simple: Because it is not a building code requirement, per National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), National Electric Code (NEC), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), International Building Code (IBC), local municipalities or each individual State.
A PLAUSIBLE HOTEL GUEST ROOM SCENARIO
• A total power grid failure happens at night, in an unfamiliar hotel room, with no ambient light available through a window from streetlamps or even from moonlight. Most occupants would prefer to stay in their rooms for comfort, safety, and security……. until the building Fire Alarm System is activated, for any multiple of beneficial reasons, which requires your immediate evacuation from the building.
• If you were sleeping within an unfamiliar hotel room and suddenly awakened in the middle of the night, without any light source, could you safely navigate the guest room furniture and find the exit door from your guest room suite? From the guest room bathroom? Could you see how to disengage the door locks and quickly unlock the door and egress the room, safely?
CREATING VALUE THROUGH INNOVATION
The new Sterling Langley LLC concept of “Hotel Guest Room Emergency Lighting” devices were specifically designed for the retrofit of existing guest room suites and guest suite bathrooms, without losing a single day of guest room revenue. The new appliances, once installed, are literally hiding in plain sight. The new Emergency Lighting concepts were originally designed for use in the hospitality industry but has found traction with other commercial and residential markets.
Lloyd Aronoff, Founder of Sterling Langley LLC, provided a market statistic from the AHLA-American Hotel & Lodging Association: “There are 54,200+ hotel properties in the United States containing 5 million guest rooms. There are more than 1.1 billion guest nights billed annually in the United States”. www.ahla.com/node/134
“If we consider each of the 5 million guest rooms might require at least one Hotel Guest Room Emergency Light, and each guest room bathroom might require one Guest Room Emergency Light, the potential domestic market has now doubled from 5 million to 10 million units. These statistics do not include hospitality projects already under construction or presently in design”, added Lloyd Aronoff. It is noted the information provided by AHLA is based on the domestic hospitality market and does not include the international market.
Domestic and International licensing inquiries for Hotel Guest Room Emergency Lighting concepts are welcomed.
