St. Petersburg, FL (August 27, 2021) – This Labor Day weekend, the Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center is partnering with Powerboat P1 ahead of the Powerboat Grand Prix at the St. Pete Pier to raise awareness and enhance understanding about the value of marine life.
As racing teams from around the country arrive in downtown St. Pete for the inaugural Powerboat Grand Prix, Powerboat P1 and the Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center are kicking-off Labor Day weekend with a preview of the races and a meet-and-greet at the Discovery Center on Friday, September 3 from 2 to 3 p.m. Children and fans will have the opportunity to meet some of the drivers, view the powerboats and learn more about the importance of the local conservation of marine life during the sneak-peak races, which will begin Saturday, Sept. 4. The preview will be filmed and broadcast as part of P1’s live streaming of the race action over the weekend. This event is free for Tampa Bay Watch members. Non-members are welcome to join with purchase of an admission ticket. No pre-registration is required.
Powerboat P1 works closely with its registered charity, P1 Marine Foundation, an organization committed to the protection and improvement of the marine and coastal environment. The foundation focuses on reducing the environmental impacts of race events and continuously operating in an environmentally responsible manner. Its mission is to enhance understanding of the value of marine life through research, education and raising awareness of serious threats to marine life through effective partnerships. A special environmental guide will be produced for the race weekend.
The Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center is the only marine environmental experience in downtown St. Petersburg. The center’s mission seeks to increase the public’s awareness of the fragile nature and importance of Tampa Bay as an environmental resource. Education is infused in the center’s interactive exhibits and features hands-on experiences presented in a family-friendly environment that inspires visitors to discover ways they can make a positive impact in the community.
“We’re thrilled to partner with P1 and its foundation to support our missions to continuously educate and engage with the public on the importance of restoration, recovery and preservation of our oceans and marine life,” says Dwayne Virgint, CEO of Tampa Bay Watch. “Ultimately, we hope our combined efforts will encourage locals and visitors to be stewards of their own environment.”
P1 CEO, Azam Rangoonwala added: “In our early discussions to stage a Grand Prix in St. Petersburg we became aware of the outstanding work of Tampa Bay Watch and the superb facilities at its Discovery Centre, and our aim is for this new partnership to continue and grow over the coming years. Wherever we race, the protection of the local environment is a primary concern and selective partnerships play a key role in achieving this.”
Throughout the Labor Day weekend races, Powerboat P1 will implement its marine animal monitoring program, which involves observers being assigned specific locations on boats, on land and in a helicopter to monitor the race area for marine animals. The observers report sightings such as dolphins, manatees and turtles and they have the authority to stop the racing if necessary.
