WHAT A “PAW-SOME” IDEA!First Idea Submission Implemented All the dogs say thank you to Courtney for her recent idea submission to the City of Lakeland. Using the new ‘submit an idea’ feature on our app, Courtney suggested installing signs reminding pet owners how hot the walking surface can be on our pet’s paws. Thank you Courtney and Beau for showing off the new sign at Lake Hollingsworth. And we hope you enjoy wearing that new t-shirt! Do you have an innovative idea that you think could be implemented within the City of Lakeland? Or, perhaps you visited another city that’s doing something awesome that would be perfect for Swan City? Simply use the button at the bottom of the LakelandGov app or visit LakelandGov.net/Idea to share your idea with our Office of Innovation & Strategy. |

VOLUNTEERS HELP KEEP PUBLIC SPACES IN BLOOM Lakeland is known for our wide variety of beautiful park spaces. In many cases, that is a credit to dedicated volunteers assisting teams within the City’s Parks Division. From Hollis Garden to the beautiful blooms found in flower beds adjacent to roads, volunteers had a green thumb in beautifying Lakeland. The City boasts more than six rose gardens. City Horticulturalist Bill Koen leads the rose program and credits the “rose volunteers” with trimming and maintaining the rose bushes. There are several teams that help keep the rose gardens healthy at the Library on Lake Morton, the Magnolia Building at Lake Mirror, and the rose garden at Veteran’s Park. Roses need TLC and pruning bushes is labor intensive. The gardens would not be as vibrant and colorful if it were not for the many volunteers that donate their precious time. Behind the scenes, the City nursery grows many plants used for landscaping parks and public buildings. The nursery is a popular location for groups to assist, including the City’s own Teen Adventure Service Camp. Dr. Karem Remond has been a dedicated volunteer with the nursery team for many years, assisting from seedling to planting. She is just one of the many volunteers that help keep the nursery running efficiently. Volunteers come in many forms. In fact, the Parks Division recently worked with four different Eagle Scouts on projects. These scouts and their troops assisted in planning and planting trees in neighborhood parks. Victory Church and the Dream Center have worked on clean-ups and plantings all over town. Companies also get into the spirit and volunteers from Home Depot as well as AgAmerica Lending have assisted with beautification projects in the past. Thank you to the many volunteers that help keep the City’s beautiful public spaces in bloom. |
