About the Tamborello Family:
The Tamborello family can trace it’s Tampa roots all the way back to 1911, when Filippo Tamborello and his wife Rosa moved from New York City to 4th avenue in Ybor City. Fast forward to 1946, his sons Henry and Sam open the Tamborello Brothers service station. The foot traffic and conversation were always a big part of life around the station including regular visits from people such as former Mayors Nick Nuccio and Dick Greco, who were both longtime customers and friends of the family.
Over the years, Tamborello Service established a reputation for being the place to take your car in Tampa. They were a family business in every sense of the word, and Henry Sr. made sure people knew it by the way they were treated. After Henry Tamborello Sr. passed away, Henry Jr. and brother Joe decided to incorporate the business in 1987 and become Tamborello Service Station Inc.. Henry Jr. retired in 2007, and Joe ultimately decided to retire in April 2016, the station’s (and his) 70th year. Friends and family organized a surprise celebration for the station’s closing. Local Ybor restaurants donated food to the event, which was covered by the local news as the service station’s closing was a major change for Ybor City.
Unfortunately, retirement was short-lived for Joe, as he passed away in January 2020. However, his memory lives on as his family will be presented the 27th Adela and Cesar Gonzmart Award the night of the Gala. The Tamborellos are an important part of Ybor City’s community history and will be remembered as such for years to come
