Sarasota nonprofit helps city’s mentally ill homeless population get off the street and back on their feet
SARASOTA, Fla., JUNE 22, 2021 – Second Heart Homes, Inc. is pleased to announce that it has received a $20,000 grant from the Global Partner Mission Committee of Church of the Palms. Church of the Palms is a member of the Presbyterian Church (USA). The grant will help support two new homes that will provide stability and critical support services for 12 homeless clients with mental health issues. In addition, the church will be supplying volunteers to tutor and mentor clients, lead skill-building and self-care workshops and maintain the homes.
Second Heart Homes is a fast-growing 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in Sarasota that helps homeless adults with mental illness secure housing and become self-sufficient. The organization provides permanent and transitional homes, daily supportive services and skill-building workshops tailored to clients’ individual needs.
“We are grateful for Church of the Palms’ generous support,” said Megan Howell, founder and executive director of Second Heart Homes. “With their help, we can expand our services to more homeless adults with mental health issues while reducing the impact of chronic homelessness on our community resources.”
“In keeping with Church of the Palms’ mission to ‘Love God – Love Neighbor,’ we are pleased to partner with Second Heart Homes,” said Matthew Straeb, chairperson for the church’s Global Partner Mission Committee.
“We admire the work that Second Heart Homes is doing. Not only do they provide homes, skill-building and support to homeless residents with mental health issues, they also give these citizens a new sense of purpose, direction and connection with the community. Everyone benefits, and for the first time in a long time, these folks feel loved,” he said.
