Cats & Kittens from the Bayou Find Safety at Sarasota’s Cat Depot

May 21, 2021 by Post

22 Kittens and 2 Cats Arrive at Cat Depot Earlier Today

Sarasota, FL (May 20, 2021) – Cat Depot “raised their paw” and stepped up to rescue twenty-two (22) kittens and two (2) cats at risk of euthanasia in rural Mississippi and Louisiana shelters. The rescue is a collaborative effort between Sarasota’s Cat Depot and New Orleans-based animal welfare organization, SpayMart, with the cats and kittens arriving in Sarasota on Thursday, May 20, 2021.

“We are working as fast as we can to provide a solution to the massive overpopulation problem in the deep south,” said SpayMart’s President and Founder, Lynn Chiche, “but until we can spay and neuter every adult cat, we will still find ourselves struggling through kitten season. We are grateful for organizations like Cat Depot who help us carry this heavy burden.”

The kittens were pulled from the Pearl River Animal Shelter in Picayune, MS and the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter in New Orleans, LA. Pearl River Animal Shelter saves only 44% of the cats that enter the shelter. Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter currently has an 83.1% live release rate, largely due to SpayMart’s kitten foster program which was responsible for 25% of the shelter’s live outcomes.

SpayMart also pulls cats with urgent medical needs from the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter. “Lucky Jack” is one of the cats that was treated and healed by SpayMart and has now arrived in sunny Sarasota along with his feline counterparts. His femur and hip were shattered by a speeding car and needed major reconstructive surgery.

“We are excited to welcome Lucky Jack and all the others to our adoption center to give them an opportunity to live a wonderful life” said Jennifer Bitner, Cat Depot’s Executive Director, “None of these cats deserved to be euthanized and collaborative partnerships like this one truly make a difference.”

Following an initial medical exam, and spay/neuter surgery, the cats and kittens will be available for adoption within the next week. To stay updated, potential adopters are encouraged to follow the cats journey on Cat Depot’s social media channels – Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube: @CatDepot. Once available, additional information can be found on the cats atwww.catdepot.org/adopt.
