The Oaks Women’s Club Awards 16 Scholarships Totaling $80,000 — Since 2002, over $730,000 has been awarded to 156 young women bound for college

April 25, 2021 by Post

Oaks Women’s Club Scholarship Committee today announced that 16 young women receiving diplomas from Sarasota County high schools this Spring have been awarded $5,000 scholarships to assist them in their college journey.

“These outstanding women were selected based on their exceptional academic ability, financial need and leadership skills both within their schools and the community at large. The financial need this year was greater than ever, so it was vital that the global pandemic does not impede our mission,” said Oaks Women’s Club Scholarship Chair, Beth Gehring.

Scholarship Co-Chair Marti Byers added, “The Oaks Club community has been so generous in supporting our fundraising activities. As a result, renewal scholarships will be offered to the 2020 recipients if they have maintained a 3.0 GPA during their freshman year.”

The Oaks Women’s Club Scholarship recipients are:
Venice High School recipients: Samantha Asselin-Cazares; Aeryal Bryen; Trina Hughes; Madelyn Kona; Olivia Sleight; Madison Studt-Campbell
Booker High School recipients: Chloe Bernal; Sophia Coscia; Zionna Williams; Brianna Witlarge-Isaacs
Sarasota High School recipients: Ausiana Laguerre; Jovanna Patino-Murillo;
Pine View recipients: Rosenna Chan; Abigail Dale;
Northport High School recipient: Erica Schmitt;
Riverview High School recipient: Dana Molina

Almost 50 applications were received, and 28 girls were interviewed. The in-person interview has been an important part of the scholarship process since the program’s inception twenty years ago.
CDC guidelines were followed with temperature checks, social distancing, and masking so interviews could take place in early March.

The scholarship winners were honored at the April 14 luncheon at The Oaks Club. Since the first scholarships were granted in 2002, over $730,000 has been awarded to 156 young women to help them reach their educational goals.
