Swimming pools are primarily divided intoinground, semi-inground and above ground options. Inground pools are quite common. They are installed in an excavated area with the rim at ground level. On the other hand, semi-inground and above ground pools have their rim above ground level. So what’s the difference between an above ground and a semi above ground pool?
Above Ground Pools
These are pools that lie completely above the ground. They are often installed as temporary fixtures hence their preference on rental properties. There are different types of above ground pools and they differ greatly with semi-inground pools. Here is how
Size
Above ground pools are small. The design is meant to provide a temporary pool option that is easy to assemble and disassemble. Nonetheless, the size is an advantage if you have limited space. Moreover, the pool has options for children and adult users. You may not be able to dive and do laps across the pool, but you can still enjoy a dip in the pool.
Cost
When it comes to cost, above ground pools are the most affordable option. The pool comes with prefabricated parts and all you need is to assemble the unit. Inflatable above ground pools are the most inexpensive option while the traditional above ground pool costs slightly higher. Nonetheless, no other pool option comes close to above ground pools in terms of affordability.
Design
Above ground pools have a limited design. Since the units are prefabricated, the specifications given by the manufacturer are all you get. Inflatable pools are designed from polyvinyl chloride, a synthetic plastic polymer, and have a floating rim. Metal pools have braces and pins that hold the wall and a tracking base for stability. On the other hand, traditional above ground pools are made from metal and resin to offer a more durable, weather -resistant build
Maintenance
Due to the small size and simple design, maintenance of above ground pools is minimal. Inflatable pools are cleaned by draining and refilling the pool. Traditional above ground pools operate pumps and need more care but it’s nothing compared I ground or semi-inground pools
Semi-inground Pools
This pool combines the benefits of inground pools and above ground pools. It’s a unique design and has aesthetic benefits. The rim of the pool sits significantly above ground level but the depth extends below the ground. Aside from the structure, there are other differences between semi-inground pool and above ground pool
Cost
A semi-inground pool costs more than an above ground pool. It’s a more permanent installation and requires professional installation. Land excavation is needed to house the pool and a strong build must be used to sustain water and soil pressure. As a result, high material and labour costs are incurred. Moreover, permits are needed to prepare the installation site making the pool a costlier option. Nonetheless, you the benefits are worth the cost
Size
Size is not a limiting factor for semi-inground pools. The build can stretch to occupy extensive areas but smaller installations are available for small spaces. Moreover, the pool can go deep since the base lies below the ground level. The only downside to a big installation is the cost.
Design
Semi-inground pools offer numerous design options. The pools vary in shape with rectangular, circular, oval and custom shapes. Most incorporate concrete and stone in their design but prefabricated liners are available in vinyl and fibreglass. The advantage of semi-inground pools is the additional fixtures it can have. The pool can have pool lights, a deck and unique staircase fittings leading to the elevated rim.
Maintenance
The maintenance requirements for semi-inground pools is more than above ground pools. The unit requires regular cleaning and the filtration unit must be accessed frequently for faults. Depending on the material used for lining the interior of the pool, you may also have to deal with algae and erosion.
Both above ground and semi-inground pools have their pros and cons. Nonetheless, they are great units and their differences are their selling points.
