TAMPA, FLORIDA, FEBRUARY 2021: One of GTE Financial’s main goals is to give back to the community, and one way they do that is by awarding annual scholarships to young adults who are dedicated to academic
pursuits and community involvement.
GTE’s Student Scholarship award assists with tuition, books and supplies required for the pursuit of an undergraduate degree. In 2020 a total of $60,000 in scholarships was awarded. Winners are determined by their involvement in the community, completing a rigorous essay, sharing their academic achievements, and work experience. “Awarding these scholarships meant even more to us this year, as these students need us more than ever. These rising stars have made such an impact in their communities through various volunteer activities, all while managing a heavy academic load. We are so thrilled to present these scholarships to
students that will lead and continue to impact our communities in the future” said Holly Markman, VP of Student Strategy and Community Engagement.
One of last year’s recipients, Sommer Altier, shared her family’s story of when her sister was diagnosed with a rare pediatric bone cancer. Sommer wanted to do her part and started actively fighting against cancer by raising money. To further assist her community Sommer created a music program at her high school where her and several band members gather to perform for the elderly. “Each of us has a gift to share, and I believe we have a
responsibility to take our own unique gifts and share them in a way that enriches our fellow citizens and makes the world a better place,” said Sommer who is now a returning scholarship recipient for GTE Financial.
This year’s scholarship deadline is June 1, 2021 and all winners will be announced in August. Applicants must be a member of GTE Financial and pursuing an undergraduate degree full time. All members including
previous applicants and previous winners are encouraged to apply. Reach out to scholarships@gtefinancial.org and be sure to apply from the website www.gtefinancial.com/scholarship.
GTE Financial is a not-for-profit financial cooperative and is committed to being the preferred employer in Southwest Florida. This means they make decisions for the benefit of all their customers, whom they call
member-owners, because each one has a stake, or ownership, in their cooperative. The money GTE earns is returned to their “shareholders”, GTE member-owners, in the form of higher dividends, lower rates and new
products and services.
