Expansion teams can often be a dirty word in sports, not much is typically expected of new teams upon entering sports leagues. Typically there is at a minimum a 5 to 8 year span in which the team is borderline bad. The Tampa Bay Fury has defied those odds, while many others have failed. The list of failed franchised expansions across all professional leagues is expansive, yet and still the Tampa Bay Fury have so far avoided the fate of others. Most interesting is that the American Basketball Association experimented with a team in the Tampa area prior to this team. That team was known as the Tampa Bay Rain. That team started off strong, talented with lots of excitement and even they were not the ABA’s first attempt at the Tampa, Florida area, prior to that the Tampa Bay ThunderDawgs existed. The ThunderDawgs lasted a season, while the Tampa Bay rain lasted a few games. What is it that makes the Tampa Bay Fury different? We believe it is the experience of the coaching, owners and players. Rather than a loud splash, they have carefully crafted a slow entry path. The 2019-2020 season, the team had a few tryouts, and some exhibition games played by ABA rules to get experience under their belt. Shortly thereafter the pandemic hit the sports world like a hurricane, so the team crafted a plan to play and make it through the pandemic. By developing over a span of season organizationally, they build in the resilience needed for a sports franchise to last for years down the line. The team flew under the radar, playing exhibition games, marketing last season, then jumped into the full fire this season. So far the team over the exhibition season and the regular season for 2020-2021 has a .778 winning percentage and they are head to the American Basketball Association state playoffs to face some tough competition. So far the team is continuing the current vibe and atmosphere of winning in #champabay. Out of over 200 teams in the American Basketball Association this team is habitually ranked in the Top 25 of Teams. This is the new team to watch out for, for years to come in the Tampa Bay area! This team has won blow out games, tough games at home, surprised high ranking teams and won over time away games this season. This weekend they head north to face the St. Augustine Glory.
