Hillsborough Community College Forms Collaboration To Develop Media And Digital Workforce To Support Growing Film Industry

February 23, 2021 by Post

Hillsborough Community College has begun working on an initiative to support and expand the digital content industry in Hillsborough County, FL. The project is in collaboration with the Tampa Film Commission and Semkhor, a media and technology company.

Participating HCC students will work directly with industry leaders to have an immersive experience in all aspects of post-production from editing to sound design while earning course credits. The in-depth training will provide students with skills needed to succeed in the industry while developing key relationships within the local film community.

“We are excited for our students and the endless possibilities that will arise from their participation in these high-profile projects. This will greatly expand their industry knowledge and enhance their future careers,” said Sheila Rios, Dean of Associate in Science Programs at HCC Ybor City.

“The art of content creation is learned through mentorship and experience. Our goal is to provide unique, creative projects that allow students to work closely with successful artists so they can develop their skills and unique approach,” said David Shapiro, owner and founder of Semkhor.

This collaboration will play a vital role in the ongoing effort to develop the media and digital workforce to support the growing film industry and attract a wide range of new original content productions to the Tampa Bay region.

“Having opportunities to pair traditional classroom education with hands-on practical experience is immensely valuable. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to gain real-world experience from content creators at the highest level. We are very grateful for Semkhor’s interest in HCC and Hillsborough County,” says Tyler Martinolich, Film Commissioner, Tampa Hillsborough Film & Digital Media Commission.

Hillsborough Community College serves more than 47,000 students annually at its five campuses located throughout Tampa Bay. The College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. For more information, visit hccfl.edu.
