Krewe of the Knights of Sant’ Yago Postpones 2021 Knight Parade

December 15, 2020 by Post

The 2021 Krewe of Sant’ Yago Knight Parade, presented by MOR-TV and co-sponsored by the City of Tampa, has been postponed to Saturday, May 1. The COVID-19 pandemic presented community health concerns for the Knights of Sant’ Yago, which organizes the illuminated parade that typically draws thousands of participants and spectators to historic Ybor City.

“We’ve worked with the City of Tampa and MOR-TV to assess the parade’s impact on the health and safety of our community during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Ken Willis, Krewe of the Knights of Sant’ Yago member and 2021 parade chairman. “Postponing the parade is the smartest choice to limit the spread of COVID-19.”

The 2021 Knight Parade will begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 1 as illuminated floats roll down Seventh Avenue in historic Ybor City. The floats are accompanied by dozens of marching bands, local dignitaries and thousands of participants as they throw scores of beads to an expected 100,000 spectators.

“Our community’s safety was our top priority in the decision to postpone the parade,” said Pam Barber, President and General Manager of MOR-TV. “We look forward to celebrating together in May.”

The change matches the decision to postpone other festivities that are held during Tampa’s Gasparilla season of events. The Krewe of Sant’ Yago Knight Parade will still occur two weeks after the Gasparilla Pirate Fest, as it traditionally does.

Proceeds from the Knight Parade benefit the Krewe’s Education Foundation, which has provided nearly $3 million in higher education scholarships since it was established in 1994. Each year, the Krewe of the Knights of Sant’ Yago Education Foundation awards scholarships to deserving students at local colleges and universities, including USF.
