SARASOTA COUNTY – The Sarasota County Board of County Commissioners selected Alan Maio, District 4, as chair and Christian Ziegler, District 2, as vice chair for 2021 during the annual strategic planning retreat on Friday. Nancy Detert, District 3, will serve as pro tem. The chair presides at commission meetings and represents the board during ceremonial functions and the vice chair assumes duties for the chair if unavailable. The commissioners voted to select the positions, which are effective Jan. 1, 2021. |
“I am delighted to steer the county into a new year and continue supporting our community through this time,” Maio said, adding, “I appreciate my colleagues’ confidence to serve as chair of the board and guide the momentum of our priorities for the new year”. Maio was elected to the Sarasota County Commission in November 2014 and has previously served as chair in 2016 and vice chair in 2020 and 2015. He is the incoming 2021 chair of the Peace River/Manasota Regional Water Supply Authority and his other community and civic association activities include serving as chair of the Sarasota County Planning Commission, and former Commissioner of the Nokomis Volunteer Fire Department. He has also served on the Board of Directors for the Venice, Greater Sarasota and North Port Chambers of Commerce, Suncoast Blood Bank, Habitat for Humanity, and Goodwill Manasota. Maio has also supported various roles for the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Advisory Board, and the Economic Development Council. Current chair Michael Moran, District 1, current vice chair Alan Maio, District 4, will continue serving in those roles for the remainder of 2020.
