SARASOTA, Fla. (October 28, 2020) – With extraordinary U.S. political events unfolding each day, WUSF Public Media this November 16 will bring a special livestream event to the wider Tampa Bay and Sarasota/Manatee community, featuring the stars of political news coverage at National Public Radio, including Ari Shapiro the host of NPR’s “All Things Considered.”
The live, interactive “Listen Up Livestream” event lets ticketholders log in and participate in the conversation from the comfort of their own homes. The event is set for Monday, November 16, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., and tickets are priced at $100 per household; now on sale at the “Listen Up Livestream” website, https://www.wusf.org/listenup/.
The event will come just days after the national election, and just four weeks before the Electoral College officially meets to select either Donald J. Trump or Joseph R. Biden as the next U.S. President. At the special WUSF fundraising event, guests can interact and ask questions with Shapiro, as he interviews his NPR colleagues, NPR national political correspondent Asma Khalid and NPR White House reporter Ayesha Rascoe.
“National Public Radio hosts and reporters are on the front lines of covering political events as they unfold,” said WUSF General Manager JoAnn Urofsky. “Already, this presidential season has proved to be one of the most unusual in American history, and WUSF listeners will have the chance to talk directly with these brilliant NPR journalists.”
Since 2015, Shapiro has been a host of “All Things Considered,” NPR’s award-winning afternoon newsmagazine. During his first two years on the program, listenership to the show grew at an unprecedented rate.
Previously as a correspondent for NPR, Shapiro reported from above the Arctic Circle and aboard Air Force One. He has covered wars in Iraq, Ukraine, and Israel, and he has filed stories from dozens of countries and most of the 50 states. Shapiro was born in Fargo, North Dakota, and grew up in Portland, Oregon. He is a Yale magna cum laude graduate.
Rascoe serves as White House reporter for NPR, a post that includes daily coverage from the nation’s capital, as well as President Trump’s foreign trips, such as the 2019 summit with North Korean leader Kim John Un in Vietnam, as well as the Helsinki summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2018. She graduated from Howard University.
Khalid serves as a political correspondent for NPR and co-hosts “The NPR Politics Podcast,” and is currently covering the 2020 presidential campaign. Previously, she reported on the 2014, 2016 and 2018 elections and helped launch coverage of business/technology and the future of work for Boston’s NPR station WBUR. There, she covered major stories such as the Boston Marathon bombings and the trial of James “Whitey” Bulger. A native of Indiana, she became a radio devotee during an internship at the BBC Newshour in London.
The event brings them together for the WUSF audience in an updated, online version of the annual Sarasota “Listen Up Luncheon” that has hosted NPR icons such as Robert Siegel. The “Listen Up Livestream” is part of a growing lineup of live events that WUSF has brought to the community, including on-stage performances of shows such as “Snap Judgment,” “Wait Wait, Don’t Tell Me,” and “Science Friday.”
