What is a registered investment advisor?
A registered investment advisor (RIA) is a firm who advises individuals on investments and manages their portfolios. RIAs have a fiduciary duty to their clients, which means that they have a fundamental and legal obligation to provide investment advice that always acts in their clients’ best interests. As the first word of their title indicates, RIAs are required to register either with the Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) or state securities administrators.
Most Investment advisors are paid a flat fee or percentage of AUM (Assets Under Management) to advise clients on securities and/or manage portfolios. This is in contract to brokers who are paid commissions to execute trades or buy and sell assets for clients.
