Lace Up & Join the Y Virtually this Thanksgiving

October 26, 2020 by Post

All proceeds from the Y’s traditional Thanksgiving run – Goody Goody™ Turkey Gobble – will benefit local cancer survivors & their families.

Tampa, FL (Oct. 14, 2020) – If you’re looking to continue or start a Thanksgiving tradition next month, the Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA invites you and your loved ones to join this year’s Goody Goody™ Turkey Gobble race virtually. Celebrating its 6th year, the Goody Goody™ Turkey Gobble is an annual Thanksgiving tradition and this year, out of an abundance of caution, the tradition will continue virtually November 22 – 28. Choose a route in your own neighborhood, run at your local YMCA, discover a new trail or run while you’re out of town visiting relatives.

“It won’t be the same start and finish line in Downtown Tampa, but families can still go outside and run together. The virtual event concept puts more emphasis on the cause and gives runners a greater sense of purpose,” says Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA President & CEO Matt Mitchell. “It’s the perfect time to be thankful for good health and spend time with our loved ones.”

The annual event has been a source of fundraising for local cancer survivors and their families for the past five years raising more than $296,000. All proceeds raised from the Goody Goody™ Turkey Gobble 5K will support LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA. The 12-week Y program offers people affected by cancer a safe, supportive environment to participate in physical and social activities focused on strengthening the whole person at no cost to the participants.

“The process of being treated for cancer with chemo, radiation and surgery is one of the loneliest times a person can experience. While you do receive an outpouring of support, not many people truly understand the pain you go through physically and mentally during that time. With COVID-19 going on, I can only imagine how much more secluded those going through it must feel,” said cancer survivor and LIVESTRONG graduate Chris Brewer. “The LIVESTRONG program is incredible and allows survivors to interact with each other. LIVESTRONG gives you the strength to go out in the world and help others want to fight during this darkest time of their life. I’ll forever be grateful to the LIVESTRONG program at the YMCA.”

Registered participants now have the full week of November 22 – 28 to complete the race and receive some fun swag like a Special Edition 2020 race shirt and finisher medal. Anytime during Thanksgiving week, participants can choose the location, date and time to complete the 3.1 miles and log their final time. To make it even more fun and meaningful, participants can also join a team and/or help the Y with their own personalized fundraising link.

Registration is open until 11:59pm on Saturday, November 28:
Donation for individuals: $29
Special Family of Four package: $110
