October 5, 2020 (ORLANDO, FL) – LGBT+ Center Orlando (The Center) is pleased to announce a generous $2,500 grant from State Farm to partially fund the organization’s senior program Older Wiser Learners (OWL).
The OWL program was launched in 2013 and was intended to improve the quality of life for LGBT+ seniors in Central Florida. LGBT+ seniors are twice as likely to experience social isolation than their straight counterparts and half as likely to have life partners or family to call on in an emergency (pre-COVID). Through the OWL program, The Center hopes to empower LGBT+ seniors through regular education seminars designed to help them navigate through unique challenges associated with aging.
In 2021, the current OWL program will be reimagined to include additional opportunities for people over 55 to engage with The Center. The new OWL program activities will occur at The Center Orlando located at 946 N. Mills Avenue, Orlando, 32803. The Center Kissimmee (17 W. Monument Avenue, Kissimmee, 34741) will continue hosting weekly senior socials on Wednesdays at 10 am.
