4 Ways Technology Can Impact Your Relationships

June 16, 2020 by Post

Technology is a double-edged sword. In the majority of instances, it is the force driving improvements to the way we live our lives. A good example would be that dating site your friends might have told you about. Could there be a more straightforward way to contact other singles than tapping out messages from your own home? But is it always good to have access to something that is perhaps too convenient at times? Might this promote laziness? Dating experts from this website conducted a research on this topic and came up with four ways technology can impact your relationship.

Degree of commitment

Technology can be a valuable shorthand when it comes to making aspects of our social lives easier. This is particularly the case with social media where we can now touch base with friends, colleagues, or partners at the tap of a few buttons. The downside of this ease of contact is people can feel less inclined to commit to relationships. Dating sites are certainly a fantastic way of getting in touch with a diverse range of singles who might make a prospective partner. But the flippant way that people can swipe left or swipe right can lead to people not treating this activity with the same diligence they would have when they were meeting people in offline situations, such as by hanging out in nightclubs, singles bars or other social functions.

Human contact is impaired

Technology is fantastic in that it enables us to foster relationships in ways that were undreamt of within recent memory. The advent of video chatting has kept relationships bubbling over, even when the respective parties are separated by distance for whatever reason. But there is no substitute for face-to-face contact. The bottom line is that even when people connect on dating sites this should only really be a stepping stone towards a face-to-face encounter. Again, the way that technology has impacted relationships detrimentally is that over-reliance on websites for communication can become a crutch. People know that they can send messages 24/7 so why should they go out of their way to make proper contact?

The temptation to be flippant

Because it is so convenient to message in forums, chat rooms, or via smartphones, laptops, or any other device, a type of communication shorthand has evolved. Some of the larger social media platforms, notably Twitter, actively restrict the number of characters that can be used in texts, often reducing messages that would once have been more meaningful to abbreviations and slang. If the old-fashioned methods of communicating within relationships were often characterized by handwritten letters or lengthy phone calls, the contemporary equivalent is the precise opposite. People can know fire-off texts laden with emojis or GIFs or other arresting attachments, ensuring what is being said is sometimes clocked in flippancy at best, or at the other end of the scale, the context alters completely.

Self-confinement

By far the most far-reaching impact that technology has had on relationships as in the way it has affected mental health. statistics repeatedly show that one in four people will suffer from some form of mental duress at some point, and being bombarded with social media noise certainly doesn’t improve the situation. You might go onto a particular social media platform and be confronted with pictures of glamorous individuals, these might well be fake pictures or at the very least doctored by Photoshop, nevertheless the impression that is conveyed is of a certain idea of perfection. This can lead to all sorts of feelings of low self-esteem or body dysmorphia, Which can affect relationships
