WUSF Public Media Introduces BBC World Service Program “Outlook Weekend”

June 1, 2020 by Post

Sunday morning program explores true life stories behind global trend
[TAMPA, June 1, 2020] — WUSF Public Medi is pleased to begin airing the famed BBC World Service program Outlook Weekend, which explores the intimate and fascinating lives of real people during extraordinary times. Outlook Weekend will begin airing June 7 at 7:30 a.m. and will air weekly on WUSF 89.7, streaming at WUSF.org and through the WUSF mobile app.
Outlook Weekend takes listeners across the world to meet people living extraordinary lives. For instance, in one recent episode, hosts Sharanjit Leyl and Rico Hizon toured their home country of Singapore and interviewed the resident historian of the famed Raffles Hotel, plus a rare martial arts trainer May Ooi, plus the street artist Slac Satu who found ways around Singapore’s strict anti-graffiti ban.
Other series explored unusual family business, such as the neon artist family of London’s Soho district, the Knight family of professional wrestling, a mother-and-son team who sell gold jewelry to hip-hop royalty and the father-and-daughter team of lifeboat captains who save lives off the coast of the Isle of Man.
“Outlook Weekend gives us a window into so many different worlds,” said WUSF General Manager JoAnn Urofsky. “These stories remind us that the news events around the world are really made of individual people with their own personal and fascinating stories. This is truly global radio at its best.”
Outlook Weekend joins several other acclaimed programs starting on WUSF Public Media. The BBC World Service program The Inquiry will air Sundays from 7 a.m. to 7:30 a.m., and this month The Daily, produced and created by The New York Times and distributed by American Public Media, began airing on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
In addition to growing its lineup of quality national and global programming, WUSF Public Media has been recognized for its quality of local reporting. In May, WUSF reporters and editors won three regional Edward R. Murrow awards for their excellence in investigative journalism, news series, and sports reporting, as well as 15 awards from the Florida Association of Broadcast Journalists.
