WFTS is the Only Tampa Bay Area News Organization Honored in Multi-State Competition
ABC Action News has been recognized with two regional Edward R. Murrow awards. The news organization is the only station in the Tampa Bay area to receive these prestigious honors. The awards were given to WFTS by the Radio Television Digital News Association after comparing all large market news stations in the southeast United States, including the cities of Atlanta, Miami, Jacksonville, Orlando, and the Tampa Bay area. This announcement comes just days after ABC Action News won seven news coverage awards from the Florida Association of Broadcast Journalists.
ABC Action News was singled out in the categories of “Continuing Coverage” and “News Series.” The professional organization commended “Up in Flames,” years of reports exposing and bringing national attention to certain cars catching fire without warning. Also getting the judges’ attention was the investigation, “Florida Teachers Failing & Frustrated.” It revealed a controversial state test forcing teachers out of the classroom.
Since 1971, RTDNA has been honoring outstanding achievements in broadcast and digital journalism with the Edward R. Murrow Awards. Among the most prestigious in news, the Murrow Awards recognize local and national news stories that uphold the RTDNA Code of Ethics, demonstrate technical expertise and exemplify the importance and impact of journalism as a service to the community. Murrow Award winning work demonstrates the excellence that Edward R. Murrow made a standard for the broadcast news profession.
“These awards show the importance we place on quality journalism and issues affecting our community,” said VP/General Manager Nick Nicholson.
News Director Sarah Moore commented, “Exclusive, in-depth reporting will always set us apart and give our audience a clear choice. I’m happy to see our team recognized for this type of important coverage.”
