GULFPORT, FLORIDA: The LGBTQ Resource Center at Gulfport Public Library continues its free monthly LGBTQ Film Series on Thursday, March 12 with a coming of age romantic comedy rated by Rotten Tomatoes and The Advocate as among the best LGBTQ films. The Film Series is a free gathering to watch a film in the company of friends and neighbors on the second Thursday of each month. Each film begins at 7pm in the Friends Room at Gulfport Public Library (5501 28th Avenue South). Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Licensing restrictions prohibit explicitly naming film titles in general press releases. But feel free to call the Library at (727) 893-1074 for the film title and other information about the film series. Or find titles and more information online: www.mygulfport.us/lgbtq-resources.
About the March 12 film: Simon Spier is a nice normal teenage guy, in a normal loving family, and he’s looking forward to graduation. He also has a secret: he’s gay. He has yet to tell his family or friends he is gay and he doesn’t actually know the identity of the anonymous classmate he has fallen for online. Working through these issues becomes hilarious, terrifying and life-changing. “This film is a funny, heartfelt, and truly touching teen romantic comedy that instantly becomes a modern classic for today’s generation.” (Molly Freeman – Screen Rant) (Rated PG-13)
Save the date, Thursday April 9, for the next film in the series. The documentary shot between 1985-1989 shows a behind-the-scene look at the golden age of New York “Drag Balls” where rival fashion houses come together to celebrate, “vogue” and compete for bragging rights. This film is considered by Rotten Tomatoes and Entertainment Weekly as one of the all-time best LGBTQ films. “Success and status in the world often depend on props you can buy, or steal, almost anywhere – assuming you have the style to know how to use them.” (Roger Ebert) (Rated R)
Watch for announcements of other films as they are added to the series on the second Thursday of each month.
