Feb. 14, 2020 – ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. – This September, the St. Petersburg community will host K9s United 9K for K9s, a nonprofit-organized race event to benefit K9 law enforcement officers and their handlers. The K9s United 9K for K9s will include the 1-mile fun run, a classic 5k, and a challenging 9k, and intends to become an annual community event.
A predominantly volunteer-based nonprofit, K9s United is committed to supporting and honoring K9 law enforcement officers who detect, protect and serve our communities. In 2019, the St. Petersburg Police Department received support from K9s United after K9 Officer Titan was shot in the line of duty. After a long recovery and rehabilitation at Partridge Animal Hospital in St. Petersburg, Titan is back on active duty.
“Titan and I were so lucky to receive so much community-wide support following his injury, including much needed financial support to help cover his vet bills. This support made such a difference in getting this superior canine back on the job as quickly as possible,” said Officer Greg Shone, Titan’s handler. “We hope to pay that support forward through K9s United 9k for K9s St. Petersburg!”
The event will be held Sunday, September 27, 2020 at Albert Whitted Park in St. Petersburg, FL. Both the 5k and 9k will be chip-timed with awards for the top runners in each category. All races are open to runners and walkers of all levels, as well as “virtual racers,” who would like to support the cause but aren’t able to attend. Online registration is available here.
Designed as more than just a running event, K9s United 9K for K9s is open to the entire community and will include vendors, kid-friendly exhibits, live music and a K9 meet and greet/demo. Local businesses are encouraged to get involved and a wide variety of sponsorship opportunities are available. Click here to learn more.
