TAMPA, Fla. – In honor of Black History Month, saxophonist Mike Phillips will offer a free young musician’s workshop on the history of jazz on Saturday, February 15, and a benefit concert for RCS Pinellas and the NAACP of Clearwater/Upper Pinellas on Sunday evening, February 16.
Known as one of the most electrifying instrumentalists today, Phillips is the only musician in the world to have recorded and toured with the legendary “Big Three” of American soul and pop music: Michael Jackson, Prince and Stevie Wonder. The weekend of February 15 and 16, he’ll share his talent with Pinellas County during Black Love Weekend—a celebration of Black History Month and the perfect way to cap off the Valentine’s weekend. This is an once-in-a-lifetime chance to get close to a musical master: Only 75 reservations will be taken for the workshop and only 150 tickets will be sold for the concert.
The young musicians’ workshop for ages 12-18 is free, but preregistration is required by emailing jonita.lewis@rcspinellas.org or calling 727-480-2773. The workshop will take place 3-5 p.m. on Saturday, February 15, at Mt. Olive AME Church, 600 Jones Street in Clearwater. The $55 ticket price for the Sunday, February 16 concert includes a free copy of Mike’s newest CD, which he can also autograph. The 5:30 p.m. event will be held at Wild Rover Brewing Company, located at 13921 Lynmar Blvd. in Tampa. Tickets may be purchased online at the Wild Rover Brewing Co. website (https://wildroverbrewing.com/).
RCS Pinellas thanks Workshop Sponsor Regions Bank, Weekend Sponsors Boundless Consulting and Contracting and Kirk Smith Unlimited as well as the host venues, Mt. Olive AME Church and Wild Rover Brewing Company, for making these Black History Month celebrations possible.
