Record-number 15 local high schools to compete for cash prizes totaling $2,850
TAMPA, FL (January 13, 2020) — Suncoast Credit Union will sponsor and host the 10th annual Financial Football tournament on Saturday, January 18, 2020, and expects the largest turnout in the game’s 10-year history. Scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. and continue through 12 p.m. in the Suncoast Credit Union Admin II Building Community Room, students from 15 local high schools will compete in a football-themed contest to see which team has acquired the most financial knowledge.
This fun and interactive program provides financial education to students using football as the theme. Each team will have four members and the three teams with the most points at the end of the tournament will be declared the winners. In advance of the tournament, Suncoast provided students with resources and study tools to prepare teams for the tournament.
High schools competing in this year’s event include: Armwood, Bloomingdale, Bowers-Whitley, Brandon, Chamberlain, Brooks DeBartolo, DW Waters, Gather, Hillsborough, Jefferson, Kids Community College, King, Simmons, Spoto and Sunlake.
Prizes:
- First Place: $250 gift card per person and a $500 donation to the team’s school
- Second Place: $150 gift card per person and a $300 donation to the team’s school
- Third Place: $75 gift card per person and a $150 donation to the team’s school
In the 2019 competition, Jefferson High School emerged victorious. The team, which is coached by Larissa Lizarraga, Co-Director of Leadership Academy of Business and Finance Honors, plans to defend its title in this year’s event.
Eric Dungy, former USF football player and son of former NFL Pro Football Hall of Fame coach Tony Dungy, will deliver opening remarks and kick off the tournament with a coin toss. This is Dungy’s third consecutive year of involvement with the Financial Football Tournament.
“This year’s event is going to be the best one, yet,” says Kourtney Berry, Youth Outreach Manager at Suncoast Credit Union. “We’re expecting 60 students to participate, which is the most we’ve had for this event. The teams are all quite competitive and bring an infectious energy to the room. We’re excited to be able to not only educate our youth on sound financial management, but to groom them to be future savers and smart stewards of their money.”
Lunch will be provided to all teams after the tournament.
Suncoast’s in-school programs offered to elementary, middle and high school students educate youth on money management concepts while providing them with hands-on learning opportunities. For more information on Suncoasts’ youth outreach, please email kourtney.berry@suncoastcreditunion.com.
