GULFPORT, FLORIDA: The LGBTQ Resource Center at Gulfport Public Library continues its monthly free LGBTQ Film Series on Thursday, November 14 with a film about women falling in love against the backdrop of women’s lucha libre, Mexican-style wrestling. The Film Series is a free gathering to watch a film in the company of friends and neighbors on the second Thursday of each month. Each film begins at 7pm in the Friends Room at Gulfport Public Library (5501 28th Avenue South). Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

About the November 14 film: A film fest favorite, this 2018 indie comedy/romance/drama tells the story of Zaynab, a Pakistani Muslim lesbian who cares for her TV-obsessed mother, who is also determined to find a husband for her daughter. After Zaynab meets and falls for a bold, spirited Mexican woman, she discovers herself more fully as she immerses herself in the sport of lucha libre, Mexican-style wrestling. “Unsentimental sweetness and pluck.” (Los Angeles Times) (Not Rated)
Save the date, Thursday December 12, for the next film in the series. This 2014 film is inspired by a true story. In 1984’s Thatcher-ruled Britain, a strike by the National Union of Mineworkers prompts a group of LGBT activists to raise money for the families of striking workers. Initially rebuffed by the Union, the LGBT group targets a small village in Wales where they decide to try and offer their donation in person. The strike drags on and the two groups find that standing together forms the strongest of all unions. “A joyous crowd-pleaser that genuinely works.” (Rotten Tomatoes). (Rated R)
Watch for announcements of other films as they are added to the series on the second Thursday of each month.
