Nursing school sees 26,000-square-foot expansion of St. Pete campus
TAMPA, Fla. (August 5, 2019) – Galen College of Nursing is expanding its footprint in the Tampa Bay area with a 26,026-square-foot expansion of its St. Petersburg campus. The school will soon be the largest tenant in Arrow Point Plaza, located at 10200 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street N, occupying 95,164 square feet of the 97,340-square-foot office building.
Claire Calzon and Joanne Leblanc of Colliers International Tampa Bay represented the landlord, Arrow Point Plaza LLC. Katie Trott and Jimmy Johnson of Foundry Commercial represented Galen College of Nursing.
Now in its 30th year, Galen College of Nursing is the largest educator of nurses in the south and continues to grow to meet the demand for nurses in the community. With over 1,600 students at the Tampa Bay campus, Galen graduates over 150 future nurses four times every year.
The American Nurses Association estimates that the U.S. will need to produce more than 1 million new registered nurses by 2022 to fulfill the country’s health care needs. Florida is among the top states feeling the impact of this shortage: Combined, Florida, Texas and California account for nearly 40% of the national nursing shortage.
Galen College of Nursing offers practical nursing (PN), associate, baccalaureate and master degree nursing programs to over 6,000 students across five ground campus locations and its online campus. The College recently opened a new campus at Northside Hospital in St. Petersburg.
“As baby boomers age, the need for qualified health care professionals grows. This is compounded by the limited student capacity at many nursing schools, as well as Florida’s growing population,” said Mark Vogt, CEO, Galen College of Nursing. “This expansion in St. Petersburg will allow us to continue to grow and evolve programs and services that support student success in nursing education and our partners in healthcare.”
Galen moved to the Arrow Point Plaza in August 2018 and took over 69,138 square feet of space. Prior to that, they occupied 46,000 square feet of the Bankers building on Roosevelt Blvd. The new campus currently houses classrooms, clinical learning labs and a simulation hospital where students practice clinical and decision-making skills through varied real-life situational experiences without compromising patient well-being. With an emphasis on student support, the college also offers a student resource center, private and group study rooms, and a library, to ensure the success of its diverse student population.
“This location is perfect for an institution like Galen because it is easily accessible from Tampa, St. Petersburg and Clearwater,” said Claire Calzon, Executive Managing Director, Colliers International Tampa Bay. “The owners completed an extensive renovation prior to their move in in 2018, creating an ultra-modern contemporary space for the school to call home.”
Plans are currently underway to renovate the 26,000 square feet of new space to meet the needs of its students and employees. The renovation is expected to be completed in the summer of 2020.
