Sarasota Military Academy (SMA) is proud to announce the first annual SMA Inspire Education Summit, in partnership with SMA teacher and outreach director Todd Brown, PhD., creator of the SMA “The Inspire Project.” Held on August 9, 2019, at the SMA Prep campus, located at 3101 Bethel Lane in Sarasota, the summit will feature renowned speakers from around the world with a focus on health, earth, and equality.
“We are incredibly proud to bring the first annual SMA Inspire Education Summit, presented by Sarasota Military Academy, to Sarasota County schools and teachers. This event aims to increase collaboration between our educators and staff and will have a major, positive impact on our students,” said Dr. Todd Brown, PhD., creator of the SMA “Inspire Project and Sarasota Military Academy Outreach Director. “We are looking to challenge the more ‘traditional’ methods of teaching as we find ways to have a global impact within our community.”
With a goal of increasing collaboration with schools, clubs, teachers, and students throughout the county, and increasing community outreach for SMA, the summit aims to spread the Inspire Project discussion and mentor series and initiatives with other schools around the world.
For the “Health” sector, speakers include Dr. Pardis Sabeti, Time Most Influential People and People of the Year, Sabeti Lab (Broad Institute) of MIT/Harvard; Ridhi Tariyal: Co-founder of NextGen Jane and Blavatnik Fellow at Harvard University; Dr. Christian Brechot: President of the Global Virus Network and Dr. Todd Brown: Teacher SMA Prep.
Dr. Esther Ngumbi: Post-Doctoral Researcher, One World 1 of 100 women changing the World, 2018 SEB + President’s Medal Winner; Dr. Tracy Fanara: MythBusters, Environmental Civil Engineer, National EPA Rainworks Challenge Teams Winner, Mote Marine hydrologist; and Deb Walker: Teacher SMA Prep, will present during the “Earth” section of the summit, and the “Equality” sector will feature Aradia: Singer/SongWriter from NYC and LA; Abdi Nor Iftin: Somali refugee and author of the acclaimed book, “Call Me American” and Lynore Fontecha: Teacher SMA Prep.
The summit will be held on Friday, August 9, 2019, from 9am – 2pm at the SMA Prep middle school campus and is open to teachers from around the county who are invited to register to attend at no cost. Attendees will receive tools to involve and equip schools, clubs and teachers for large-scale initiatives and lessons that will increase civic and scientific engagement at a local, state, national, and/or international level. Registration is ongoing through the Sarasota County Professional Development System.
