Medical Center of Trinity Performs First Robotic-Assisted Coronary/Vascular Interventional Procedure in the Tampa Bay Region

July 12, 2019 by Post

Medical Center of Trinity patients with coronary and peripheral artery disease now have access to a new robotic-assisted technology to perform angioplasties to restore blood flow.

Trinity, FL – July 2, 2019 Medical Center of Trinity announces the successful completion of the first robotic-assisted coronary/peripheral angioplasty in the Tampa Bay Region.  This is the first and only FDA-cleared and CE Marked medical device to bring robotic-assisted precision and control to coronary and peripheral interventional procedures.

This offers physician’s minimally invasive technology which improves the precision of stent placements.  Combining the enhanced visualization of the x-ray images with robotic precision transforms the procedures, ultimately improving patient care.

Sitting away from the x-ray source in a radiation-protected cockpit, physicians are able to use a joystick to advance the interventional devices, millimeter by millimeter through the artery.  It also reduces radiation exposure during the procedure for physicians.

“We are proud to be the first medical center in the Tampa Bay Region to adopt robotic-assisted technology for our coronary and peripheral interventions program, “said Leigh Massengill, CEO of Medical Center of Trinity.  “The adoption of the robotic procedure truly emphasizes our continuous commitment to delivering state of the art technology to our patients and clinical community.”

Coronary artery disease, characterized by plaque buildup that restricts blood flow in the arteries, is a widespread and life-threatening condition. Traditionally, percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), commonly known as an ‘angioplasty,’ is the most common treatment for CAD. In this procedure, Interventional Cardiologists use balloons and stents (wire metal mesh tubes) to physically open an artery blockage and help improve blood flow long-term.
